Shadow Working Tool: Self-Awareness

Hey Soul Fam!

With everyone becoming deeply triggered into healing and shadow working this year, it is the perfect time to learn some tools. Becoming self-aware during the shadow working is probably one of the biggest keys that will help you with the process. How do we become self-aware? By questioning everything around us, including ourselves. In asking ourselves questions, we are made aware of our patterns. By choosing to self-reflect and check in with ourselves daily, we can get a better understanding of our shortcomings and faults. The self-actualization journey is one where you will learn how to spend a lot of time with yourself and your thoughts. It is a time where we learn how to be more introverted and introspective. It is a time where you will be questioning everything about yourself. Those of you who have read my blog about self-actualization know my stance on it coinciding with the spiritual journey and shadow working. We can’t do one without doing the other and becoming self-aware is a crucial part of the journey moving forward.

On a daily basis, you should take time for yourself. This is best achieved by constructing a daily self-care schedule or ritual for yourself. Some believe that it is better to meditate on themselves early in the morning, while others like to do so at the end of their day. What you choose to do will be personal to you, what matters is that you do the exercise period. Either way, a self-care ritual is something that you will be constructing for yourself going forward. If you have trouble staying on task, then I highly recommend setting alarms and reminders for yourself. Becoming more self-aware means that you are becoming aware of not just yourself, but also your environment, what you say, what you do, how you spend your time, whose company you keep- everything will be coming under the microscope, so to speak. Keeping a daily schedule will help with your transition into this journey and help you become more disciplined about your healing. Self-care is something that is essential to practice now, and a part of self-care is self-awareness. This exercise is something that you should practice daily, especially when you are meditating and communing with the universe.

Self-Awareness Meditation

NOTE: If you have not established a meditation foundation then please go read the blog about Beginner’s Meditations before you proceed.

Begin by finding a calm space where you can begin relaxing your entire body. You can choose to be sitting, standing, or laying down when you do this meditation. Next, choose the breathing pattern that you will hold during your meditation session. I prefer my beginners to start at a count of 636 but if this strains you in ANY way, please try 525. Begin your foundational power breathing, and after a few minutes you should be relaxed enough to begin your visualizations practice. This will be the first real visualization practice you do that creates an extension from your body. This will be useful when doing chakra work and its imperative to master these visualization techniques before moving onto that.

  1. Begin with your foundational breathing and the counting of your breathes. Do this for a few minutes so that you can calm yourself and bring yourself into a relaxed state. Once you've slowed your breathe down enough, you can begin the visualizations and asking your questions.
  2. Turn your attention to your heart center and heart chakra. As you breathe in, imagine the heart chakra expanding with energy. As you exhale, image the heart chakra releasing negative energies. After you have done this for a few rounds say “I release all people, places, and things that are no longer in alignment with me.” Exhale and imagine all the negativity being taken and pulled out of your life.
  3. Turn your attention back to your heart center and begin asking yourself the self-awareness questions (pick one or two questions to ask yourself during your meditation): Who am I? What is my purpose? What makes me happy? What makes me sad? What makes me angry? What makes me feel shame? What makes me feel guilty? What makes me feel worried? What makes me feel overwhelmed? What makes me feel frustrated? What makes me feel disappointed? What makes me feel jealous? What makes me feel insecure? What makes me feel unworthy? What makes me feel like an imposter? What makes me feel powerless? What makes me feel doubtful? What are my fears, and where are they rooted? What brings me hope? What are my passions? What makes me feel free? What motivates me? What drives me? What do I love about myself? What do I hate about myself? How has my childhood influenced me? How has my environment influenced me? What traumas do I still carry within me? What do I love about the world? What do I love about myself? What am I still holding onto from the past? What do I need to let go of? Who do I need to let go of? Who do I need to forgive? What do I value about myself? Am I in control of myself? Am I in control of my emotions? How are others mirroring my trauma back onto me? What do I need to learn about myself?
  4. Allow your mind to wander after you ask yourself a question. Allow yourself to receive messages from your spirit squad as well by just listening. Be mindful of all of the thoughts that you have during this time. What is being said? What do you see, hear, or sense? What are your thoughts? Pay attention to these things.
  5. When you are done meditating and feel as though you are finished, you can wrap up the meditation session and just open your eyes. You should then at this time journal about the experience, the questions you asked, and the answers you received.
